How to Cross Identify Fasteners

Sep 20, 2021 | Fasteners

Often customers have to cross identify fasteners which can be frustrating and time consuming. But the rewards of finding that perfect alternate or similar part is rewarding.

Sometimes it is hard to know where to begin searching for that ideal replacement part, but at Advance we can help you. Cross referencing a part is a common function of the Advance Sales Team, as we have been doing this for almost 50 years!

By using the part specifications and attributes, we are often able to suggest an alternate part that we have in-stock. There are many tools that we can use to find an substitute part, including cross reference charts that manufacturers create for their products. The Advance team uses a variety of sources, web tools and our extensive library to search for and match a particular fastener. When an exact cross is not found, we can often find a suitable substitute that will do the job.

What are you looking for?

Customers typically come to us looking to cross or find a part in three general ways:

#1. A customer has a part number from a manufacturer that Advance represents but the part number is currently out of stock or out of production. We suggest an alternate part that we have in stock, and send samples of the products, if needed.

#2. A customer has a manufacturer’s part number that is not in from a manufacturer that Advance represents. We will suggest an alternate part and samples of parts that we have in stock, or recommend another manufacturer.

#3. A customer has part specifications required for their project but needs help identifying a stocking part number.  We are often able to suggest a part our customer can use for their application. We’ll happily provide samples for specific application testing.

Cross Identifying Fasteners

Consult the Professionals

It often happens that customers cross identify fasteners with mixed results. That’s why it’s always good to consult the professionals who know the products and applications of a large variety of fasteners. The Advance team is known for their expertise in fasteners applications. Talking in-depth with customers about the specifics of a fastener or project, is essential to finding the right part. You can email a photo of the fastener, or upload an image in Find My Fastener on the Advance website. Both great ways to get the search started.

Ask for Samples

Always ask for samples if you are uncertain about the proper fit or alignment of a part. The Advance team will happily bag and ship samples to customers who want to try out a fastener before making a big purchase. As the saying goes, “Measure twice, cut once!” Fasteners hold the world together, so it’s important to have the pros cross identify fasteners in order to find the right part for the job.
